The ketogenic diet is so popular due to the fast weight loss results and health benefits. However, what are some negative aspects to it?

Loss of Carbohydrates and its Effects

Ketogenic Diet Health Risks To start off, low carbohydrate diets such as a ketogenic diet are aimed to make the body stop running on glucose, or simple sugars. However, excess sugars are arranged in more complex forms, which are called glycogen. Glycogen can be stored in the liver and muscle mass, and are able to hold more than enough for a body to function for a day. A low carbohydrate diet can get rid of these excess storage’s and lets an individual shed a couple of pounds anywhere from 2 days to a couple weeks.

An easy weight loss diet without the hunger either. Glycogen is four times its weight in water and ketogenic diets effectively get rid of them. However, the intense physical activity can also leave you dehydrated. In ketogenic diets, low carbohydrate consumption and high fat intake can induce a metabolic state called ketosis. This usually results in extreme hunger. Even though ketosis does burn off fat rather than carbohydrates, the latter can be burned faster.

Using fat as energy requires beta-oxidation, which can produce thousands of ready to use calories at the expense of a slower burn rate. Due to this, the body is unsustainable if one continues heavy physical training. A normal carbohydrate-based diet also adds muscle faster, and it is a faster metabolic process than a fat based one. Ketogenic diets can also cause muscle fatigue, due to the lack of continuous energy provided from slower processes. Because of these effects, many athletes on low carbohydrate diets simply stop exercising.

Digestion Risks

Ketogenic EffectKetogenic diets also require less fiber intake, which can result in digestive cancer or cardiovascular disease. Cutting out fruits, nuts, legumes, and grains can harm the body by taking away necessary nutrients and chemicals, such as Vitamin C and antioxidants. Sugar filled foods like fruits are also great for preventing constipation and can cause bowel movement problems when taken out. Low carbohydrate diets also turn more towards foods containing a high amount of fat. A daily diet would contain 70% to 80% of fat. An easy way to meet these targets would be to simply eat more packaged foods. However, most packaged and boxed foods do contain an unhealthy amount of preservatives and trans fats.

Organ Stress

Low Carb Ketosis Side EffectsProducing fat energy proteins will also create a large stress on your liver. As it happens, the liver converts fat into fuel. The liver is responsible for producing ketones, or proteins that your body can substitute for carbohydrates. Due to extra stress, toxic amounts of ammonia can be potentially created in the liver.  This can also impair the creation of mucus to help with the immune system. This can increase the risk of pathogenic infections, which may cause the loss of ability to produce glyco proteins that are vital to cell functions.
