Fats
When going on a ketogenic diet, you should know that the daily food intake is comprised mostly of fats. However, there are different kinds of fats such as saturated fats, monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fat, and trans fats. While on a ketogenic diet, saturated and monounsaturated fats are a green light to eat. On the other hand, choose natural polyunsaturated fats, not processed foods. Trans fats should also be avoided. Chemically stable saturated and monounsaturated fats such as butter, avocados, macadamia nuts, and coconut oil are less inflammatory to most people and are keto approved foods.
While on a ketogenic diet, you have to balance omega 3 and omega 6 intake. Seafood’s like shellfish, wild salmon, and tuna are good sources. If seafood isn’t your thing, fish oil can also be a healthy substitute. As for high inflammatory foods, some foods prone to this are almonds, nuts, and legumes. It’s best to keep a low count of these food groups. Some great examples of fatty foods to eat are: fatty fish, lard, animal fat, avocados, egg yolks, butter (also coconut and cocoa), oils (including olive oil, coconut oil, macadamia oil, and avocado oil). Tip, fry foods with coconut oil.
Proteins
The protein intake will be significantly less than fat, but it is essential to eat them for body functions. The best kinds of protein will be organic, pasture raised, and grass fed. Darker meats like beef or pork also tend to have a higher fat content opposed to light meat such as chicken. Also for red meats, especially cured ones, there is a higher chance of having processed products in them, and it is advised to not eat much of it. If you would like to incorporate meats into your diets, it’s best to choose side dishes and sauces that have high fat content in them, such as cheese or dressing oils. Some examples of keto approved foods that are good protein sources are: fish, pork, beef, shellfish, eggs, poultry, nut butter, and sausage
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables will have to be managed if you choose to go on a ketogenic diet. These two food groups are high in sugar and will need to be cut out. The best vegetables need to be high in nutrients and low in carbohydrates. Most dark colored leafy greens fall under this category. Spinach and kale are great examples. Its also best to go for organic vegetables, and it doesn’t matter whether or not the vegetables are frozen or not; both are good to eat. Some vegetables and fruits that are advised to not eat are: nightshades (such as tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers), root vegetables (onions, mushrooms, and garlic), berries, citrus, and starches (such as bananas and potatoes).
Dairy Products
Most of your energy will come from fats and proteins, but a moderate amount of lactose products can be consumed. Raw and organic dairy products are preferred to be eaten. Some great foods to eat are: greek yogurts, heavy whipping cream, mayonnaise, soft cheeses (mozzarella, blue cheese, monterey jack), and hard cheeses (parmesan, feta, swiss). Dairy is a good way to make sauces for extra fat on your dishes.
