4 Ways Your Allergies are Ruining Your Diet!

There are few things worse than waking up in the morning to feeling sick. Ok, ok, there are Many things that are Much worse: but in the moment of feeling sick, it’s really hard to remember them. Though working out while suffering from allergies will actually help your symptoms, it’s hard to get motivated when feeling the way you do.

Allergies are the body’s  reaction to a foreign substance. These substances include: pollen, animal dander, mold, dust, and insect droppings, certain foods, and insect stings. Your immune system produces substances known as antibodies. When you suffer from allergies, your immune system identifies the foreign substances, or allergens, as harmful, even though they aren’t. The reaction that occurs when you come you come into contact with an allergen is your immune system attempting to fight this foreign substance. This usually comes in the form of inflamed skin, sinuses, airways, or digestive system.

Often, when suffering from upper respiratory allergies, you will find yourself experiencing symptoms include runny nose, itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing, and sneezing. Severity of symptoms will vary from person to person and can range from minor irritation to life threatening emergencies (anaphylaxis).

Allergies make it hard for us to function. Often, we have to make the determination of:

“Do I Have a Cold, or Do I Have Allergies?”

This determination is important for your overall health, but can be tricky. Both allergies and the common cold have the same symptoms. Pushing through, and working out, can help to lessen your symptoms while you are suffering from allergies. On the other hand, you can worsen your cold by not taking care of your body, and giving it the rest and care it needs.

Though allergies are often written off as a simple nuisance, they can actually be ruining your Keto Diet, and your overall health. Here, we look at the the four reasons your allergies are ruining your diet!

1. Hidden Carbs in Medications

Nutritional information for over-the-counter medication is hard to come by. But most medications add sugary coating to make them go down easier. The addition of coating, fillers, and flavoring adds sugar and, therefore, carbohydrates.

It’s not uncommon to see  over-the counter medication included in any list of common keto slip-ups and mistakes. Something as basic as Nyquil can knock you out of ketosis with its 14g net carbs in one serving (2 tbsp). When your allergies are getting you down, be sure to do your research before taking any allergy medicine!

2. Fatigue

You’ve felt it. That feeling in your body that pulls you towards the ground. It slows you, and even stalls your mental capabilities. You feel like you are operating on a delay, and can’t quite catch up not matter how hard you try. No matter how healthy you get, fatigue can throw a wrench in any of your health and wellness plans.

Fatigue not only makes your day move a bit slower, it also makes finding the motivation to get yourself to your workout even harder. On top of that, many women tend to make less healthy decisions in the name of “Self-Care.” Yes, that cookie will taste great, and may even make you feel better for a moment. Unfortunately, no matter how good that soup from your childhood tastes or that ice cream makes you feel, slipping out of ketosis won’t make you happy in the long run! Be cautious of letting your fatigue an weaken mental state lead your decision making.

3. Weakened Immune System

It’s actually been proven that allergies weaken your immune system over time. Basically, if you don’t treat your allergies properly, they can easily progress into a sinus, ear, or upper respiratory infection. If you regularly experience allergies, your immune system can be weakened, and made less effective in fighting off other germs. Unfortunately, this can make you easy prey for colds, flus, and circulating viruses.

Not only will the continuous germ fighting on behalf of your body weaken your immune system, losing sleep to your allergy systems will intensify the effect. Additionally, if you suffer from allergic asthma, your airways will be more sensitive and more reactive to virus and germ triggers.

Once you progress from allergies to illness, you have to switch from thrive mode, to survive mode. Once sick, it’s recommended that you forgo your workouts, and instead take care of your body. Keeping up your diet also becomes more difficult, as the feeling of being sick brings cravings for comfort foods.

4. Allergic Asthma

Allergic asthma is another name for asthma that’s caused by an immune system response to an inhaled substance in the environment. Common allergic asthma triggers include pollen, dust, mold, pets, and cockroaches.

  • Asthma. If you have an allergy, you’re more likely to have asthma — an immune system reaction that affects the airways and breathing. In many cases, asthma is triggered by exposure to an allergen in the environment (allergy-induced asthma).
